Time Traveling - and how it affects your game...

Since the game first started, every one has been taking advantage of the fact that you can change your games clock. Some people find it fun to travel to special events - which they have missed, others like to time travel to times when certain bugs, fish, furniture sets or items are available while others just like to have a change of scenery. To be honest, I think we've all time traveled in our Animal Crossing lives at least once. But most of our times spent time traveling ends up in tears as we realize what we have done to our town and how long it will take to re-make such a beautiful world which is now spoiled due to your time traveling ways. But first off we need to cover the different ways of time traveling as some will mess your game up more than others and you'll need to know which ones to avoid.

Traveling in to the Past
If you've missed a special event by one day, or just needed one more candy from Pave when you needed to sign off and can't wait another year then traveling back in time is probably the best thing to do. If you've missed it by only a few days, then it would be a lot better to just reverse time and re-live these days than to go all the way in to next year. If you go forward you'll end up with a whole lot of weeds. By going backwards, you will still gain a few weeds - by this I mean, about ten, due to the fact that you'll have to travel forwards to the present date. The only thing bad about turning back time, really, is the fact that the game can detect it and will not let it go unpunished (see the Consequences section below).

Traveling in to the Future
There's a big day coming up this month (or year) and you just can't wait for it as it's your first time to be able to attend the event. Then you realize you have something that day and it's going to be impossible to play. You then decide to just travel forwards a few months so you can witness the event early. This is OK, if it is only a few weeks, if it's months/years that you're traveling forward, you may have some consequences. First off, if it's an event that involves villagers and you haven't spoken to them for ages, they will be much less eager to join in than normal. Plus, there's the classic weeds which will surround your town if you travel too far ahead. My advice would be to wait, then after the event, travel backwards, then back to present date.

Daily Travel
This is probably the safest of them all, but is very, very restrictive in to where in time you can go. For one thing, if you're looking to go to an event, unless this event occurred today then this method cannot be used. This is simply changing the time, and leaving the date. This is useful if you've been at work/school all day, have a club/meeting on and you come back home to find the boring night of Animal Crossing. There's no special visitor, the event is over and shops are closed. Well, time travel to earlier that day. The game, most of the time, does not detect this traveling and no weeds will spawn. It's also really helpful if you particularly like a piece of Animal Crossing music, you can go back/forward to that time of day and listen to it.

NOTE: Be sure to have something which can help you get the real time back in to your game. You don't want to have your game massively out of sync with real life, it's frustrating time travel so keep a clock with you, if you can.

Consequences to Time Traveling
When the game detects that you are traveling in time, in any way, it will try and punish you so you will not do it again. Obviously, the game isn't going to ground you, or keep you off the computer for a week, it's going to strike you where it hurts. By generally changing the way your town runs. Some things it does are automatic and would happen even if you didn't time travel and just didn't play for a year, while less effective punishments are given if you are caught changing the Game Clock. These punishments are listed below...

Weeds/Clovers - Come on, we all hate these pesky things which show up every day and we have to go round picking them up, one by one... Not only do they look bad but too much and you'll end up with Rafflesia, a red flower which won't go until you clean the town. Three weeds spawn randomly in to your town every day, so time travel a year and you'll have nine hundred weeds trying to invade your town, of course you won't get nine hundred weeds (these wouldn't all fit in your town), you'll just get a huge amount. The only thing decent about these pesky things is the chance to find a four-leafed clover. If you randomly pull out some clovers, you may pull out a four-leafed one. This can bring you in-game luck and may bring you towards a few hidden secrets...

Animals - How would you feel if your best friend disappeared for a year without telling you? Now imagine how the animals feel when you time travel a year... Imagine how lonely they would be in that single year you are ignoring them. When your friend returned you probably wouldn't want to be their friend any more. I mean, you would definitely be really mad and would probably not trust them for a while. This is exactly how it is with the villagers when you time travel. You'll lose a lot of friendship points and you'll be given chances for fun less and less often... What's the point of buying a game if you have no fun?
